One is not superior merely because one sees the world as odious. -- Chateaubriand (1768-1848)

The English Republic

With an unprecedented assault of on civil liberty by the New Labour project, and ever increasing loss of democratic control to the European Union, the case for a truely democratic republic for England is becoming , in my view, the only option for us to truely preserve our hard won freedoms.

English Republic

As a monarchist you’d think I’d be against such things. Maybe once I would have simply reacted with horror at the thought, but I recently realised that our future King is not merely a dunderhead but may actually be a muslim in disguise. The thought of a muslim King of the United Kingdom is enough to make my toes curl. I would rather see the institution of the monarchy abolished than have a muslim rule these lands. The phrase “destroying the village to save it” springs to mind but, in the end, I believe it may well be necessary to abandon the monarchy in favour of a true republic rather than blindly stick to a dogmatic defense of the indefensible.

In an ideal world we’d get a repeat of the Glorious Revolution and a new bill of rights affirming the sovereignty of the nation. Unfortunate the state of the nation is such that this simply will not happen. The alternatives are the status quo, a state where our freedoms are gradually eroded until we no longer remember what the word means; or a republic.

When Her Majesty dies, I choose the republic.

I think a number of people might become republican once King Charles takes to the stage, Ironic seeing as the other two Charles that we’ve had have both been disasters.

Do you think that with the possible break up of the UK we might return to the dark old days of sectarian mayhem?

Oh I don’t know, Charles the second was actually a very good king as they went in those days. Certainly he understood that keeping the people happy played a large part in keeping his head on his shoulders, so he was very populist and consequently very popular…

I don’t know about sectarian madness, but I do think that there’ll be a lot of what might be called racism if the UK did break up. It’d be hard to keep the Scots from throwing out english ’settlers’, for want of a better word, and there’d be a lot of argument over where the borders should be… crap like that.
